For used electric vehicle buyers, one number often carries significant weight: battery health. A higher percentage can make an EV appear more attractive by suggesting stronger remaining battery capacity and long-term reliability. But new research analyzing more than 1,100 electric vehicles suggests that battery health scores may not always provide a complete picture of actual battery condition.
The reason is that a battery health percentage is an estimate generated by a vehicle’s battery management system (BMS). While the number can provide useful information, researchers found that reported battery health figures did not always match independently measured battery capacity across different EV manufacturers.
The study, “Battery Health Reporting Fails Independent Validation Across Manufacturers,” analyzed data from 1,114 electric vehicles to examine whether manufacturer-reported battery health metrics accurately reflected real-world battery condition.
Researchers compared battery health information reported by EV systems with independent measurements of battery performance, including capacity retention and degradation patterns. The study examined vehicles from multiple manufacturers over an extended period to understand how reported battery health values compared with measured battery condition.
The findings suggest that battery health reporting can be more complicated than a single percentage number.

For used EV buyers, this distinction matters. Battery condition has become an important consideration when evaluating electric vehicles because battery performance affects driving range, ownership experience, and long-term value.
A vehicle showing 95% battery health may appear better than one showing 85%, but the study suggests that comparing those numbers across different vehicles or brands may not always provide a complete picture. Two EVs with similar reported health scores could have different levels of remaining usable capacity.
The challenge comes from differences in how manufacturers calculate and report battery health. Unlike mileage, which follows a relatively consistent measurement across vehicles, battery health estimates depend on manufacturer-specific systems, software models, and battery management methods.
Battery health information is increasingly becoming part of EV ownership discussions, including vehicle evaluations, resale decisions, and battery condition assessments. However, the study highlights that consumers should understand how the information is generated rather than relying only on a single percentage.
The research does not suggest that battery health scores are useless. Instead, it shows that they should be interpreted carefully and considered alongside other information, such as real-world range, service history, charging patterns, and independent battery assessments.
As more electric vehicles enter the used market, accurate and transparent battery reporting may become increasingly important. This study suggests that while battery health scores remain a valuable tool, they represent only one part of understanding an EV’s true battery condition.
